Pokemon Ruby is the first generation (1st generation) Pokemon game for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, released on November 5th, 2001. It was discontinued sometime in 2003 (unofficially but many sources also say that Game Boy Color doesn't exist anymore). The game was designed to be a bit simpler than Pokemon Blue. It was also the first Pokemon game to feature a lot of extra features like the anime and movie links, the ability to get the language in the Hoenn region, and the Gyms, which are areas where trainers fight each other.
Pokemons have also changed in this generation (1st generation) of pokemon games. They now go from a small, cute appearance (when they were first introduced) and evolve into larger, vicious Pokemon if they haven't been hibernating in a cave for a long period of time. Each Pokemon has a unique way of moving that also evolves. An example of a higher typing is "Pikachu," which is fire/electric. With each new ability or Game Freak (exclusive) Pokemon, the game takes place in a new area such as Sinnoh, Alakazam, and Unova. There are still many new Pokemons to catch and battles to train. These games can also take over 6 hours of play to finish.---MPMOGUIDE.com-
